Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. On 2 January 1971, more than 80,000 supporters attended an Old Firm match at Ibrox Park in Glasgow. The match appeared to end in dramatic fashion: Celtic took a 1–0 lead through Jimmy Johnstone in the 90th minute, before Rangers forward Colin Stein equalised moments later. As supporters streamed out of the stadium via Stairway 13, the exit nearest Copland Road subway station, a collapse in the crowd triggered a devastating chain reaction. The crush produced piles of bodies as deep as six feet, and most of the victims died from compressive asphyxia. Sixty-six people were killed, all under the age of 50; the dead included 31 teenagers, the only female victim, 18-year-old Margaret Ferguson, and nine-year-old Nigel Pickup of Liverpool. More than 200 other spectators were injured.

The tragedy was not an unforeseeable freak accident. Stairway 13 had already been associated with dangerous crowd pressure: two people died there in 1961, spectators were injured in 1967, and another 26 were hurt in 1969. Later civil proceedings found Rangers responsible for negligence in the death of 31-year-old Charles Dougan, and the club did not dispute the ruling in dozens of related damages cases, contesting only compensation amounts. Sheriff James Irvine Smith sharply criticized the club's failure to address the stairway's known dangers, saying officials had effectively ignored the problem and created the appearance of action without solving it. A widely repeated theory claimed that fans leaving early after Celtic's goal had turned back when Rangers equalised, causing opposing streams to collide, but the official inquiry rejected that explanation, finding that the crowd had been moving in the same direction. The disaster prompted Lord Wheatley's government inquiry, whose 1972 findings shaped Britain's Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds, first issued in 1973. Ibrox was subsequently rebuilt over several years into a modern all-seater stadium, while memorials unveiled in 2001 commemorated the 66 victims alongside those killed in Ibrox's earlier disaster.
