Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. The Chad Curtis High-School Sexual-Assault Convictions and the Long Civil Fallout

After retiring from Major League Baseball, Chad Curtis reinvented himself as a Christian schoolteacher, coach, and weight-training instructor in Michigan. That position of authority collapsed in 2012, when female students at Lakewood High School accused him of inappropriate touching and sexual misconduct. Investigators alleged that Curtis offered massages to female athletes—but not male students—first in the school weight room, then in an adjoining room, and eventually in a windowless trainer's room. The accusations involved two 15-year-old girls in 2012 and a 16-year-old girl in 2011; Curtis reportedly told one victim that his conduct was the most unfaithful act he had committed against his wife. He resigned from his school positions in May 2012 and was ultimately charged with six counts of criminal sexual conduct.

A jury found Curtis guilty on all six counts on August 16, 2013, including third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving penetration. During sentencing, he denied responsibility and accused the girls of lying and making unwanted advances toward him, prompting Barry County Prosecutor Julie Nakfoor Pratt to call his statement exceptionally selfish and victim-blaming. He was sentenced to seven to fifteen years in prison, and Michigan's appeals court unanimously upheld the convictions in 2015. Curtis was paroled in September 2020 after serving roughly seven years. The criminal case was followed by civil litigation: a federal jury found him liable for battery against four accusers, one victim later won a $1.8 million judgment, and the school district settled with victims for $575,000. A later lawsuit alleged that Curtis and his ex-wife transferred money, homes, vehicles, and other assets to frustrate collection of those judgments; a bankruptcy judge rejected the ex-wife's petition and described the effort as lacking good faith. Former teammate Gabe Kapler later wrote that Curtis's self-proclaimed religious moral authority had blinded him to Curtis's character.
