Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Court filings alleged that Crawford pointed to Moore’s name and number on a dressing-room board, while Crawford and the Canucks denied encouraging the assault. In the first match, Tayforth priest Eugene O'Sullivan was sent off after punching an opponent and reportedly escaped further punishment only because John-Joe Moran was restrained by teammate Sam 'the Vet' Mansley. After reaching the peak of his career in 2002—winning European Championship gold, setting a championship record of 9.96 seconds, matching Linford Christie's European record, and defeating Maurice Greene—British sprinter Dwain Chambers moved to California to train with Ukrainian coach Remi Korchemny and work with BALCO nutritionist Victor Conte. Conte presented Chambers with what he described as specialized nutritional supplements, administered as a few drops of liquid under the tongue. The substance was actually THG, or tetrahydrogestrinone, a newly developed designer anabolic steroid associated with the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative. Chambers later said Conte assured him that the substances complied with IAAF rules, but the drug had been deliberately difficult for conventional testing regimes to detect.

A sample Chambers provided during an out-of-competition test in Germany on 1 August 2003 was re-examined in October as the United States Anti-Doping Agency investigated BALCO. Both his original and backup samples tested positive, and on 7 November 2003 Chambers became the first athlete publicly confirmed to have tested positive for THG. The scandal connected him to a wider performance-enhancing-drug network involving Conte, Korchemny, Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, and other elite athletes. A UK Athletics tribunal imposed a two-year ban, backdated to the date of his suspension, while Chambers was stripped of medals and records achieved after he began taking THG, including his 2002 European title and relay gold. His relay teammates Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish, and Christian Malcolm lost their medals as a consequence. He was also ordered to repay earnings and initially received a lifetime Olympic ban, although the Court of Arbitration for Sport later overturned that permanent Olympic exclusion as incompatible with the World Anti-Doping Code. The case permanently damaged Chambers's reputation and became one of the defining revelations of the BALCO era.
