Less than 48 hours later, while celebrating with teammates in his campus dormitory, Bias suffered fatal cardiac arrest caused by cocaine-induced intoxication. The tragedy devastated the sports world and directly spurred the United States Congress to pass the landmark Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986.

Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. The NHL reinstated Bertuzzi for the 2005–06 season, a decision that remained controversial because Moore’s career had ended while Bertuzzi was permitted to return. Moore pursued civil litigation against Bertuzzi, the Canucks organization, Brian Burke, and others, initially seeking millions in damages. The case generated years of delays, arguments over responsibility, and a separate lawsuit by Bertuzzi against former Vancouver coach Marc Crawford, before Moore’s amended claim was resolved through a confidential out-of-court settlement in August 2014. On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. The blow knocked Moore unconscious; Bertuzzi’s momentum and body weight drove Moore face-first into the ice, and Vancouver’s Sean Pronger and Colorado’s Andrei Nikolishin became entangled in the pile-on. Moore remained motionless for roughly ten minutes before being taken away on a stretcher with three fractured cervical vertebrae, facial injuries, and a concussion.

Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Court filings alleged that Crawford pointed to Moore’s name and number on a dressing-room board, while Crawford and the Canucks denied encouraging the assault. Bertuzzi later filed a third-party complaint against Crawford, claiming he had been obliged to follow the coach’s orders; Crawford countered that Bertuzzi had acted in direct disobedience of instructions to leave the ice. That dispute was settled confidentially in 2011. In August 2014, Moore, Bertuzzi, and the Canucks finally reached a confidential settlement, ending a decade-long legal saga without a public trial verdict determining ultimate liability.

Moore immediately lost consciousness; Bertuzzi fell on top of him and drove his face into the ice, while players from both teams piled into the collision. A full line brawl erupted, initially prompting cheers from some Vancouver fans who believed Moore was receiving payback, but the arena fell silent when it became clear he was seriously hurt. Moore remained motionless for roughly ten minutes before being carried away on a stretcher. He suffered three fractured neck vertebrae, vertebral-ligament damage, a grade-three concussion, brachial-plexus nerve injuries, facial lacerations, and amnesia. Croke Park crowd violence after the 1983 All-Ireland final

The ugliness of Dublin's 1983 victory was not confined to the pitch. Reports the following morning described inadequate crowd supervision, dangerous crushing at the Canal End and on Hill 16, and a spectator being stabbed. Supporters also clashed after the final, while buses carrying Galway fans out of Dublin were reportedly pelted with stones. The disorder intensified the sense that the match had become a wider public-safety failure rather than merely an exceptionally rough football game. Newspapers devoted much of their coverage to the crowd scenes instead of Dublin's two-point victory, placing pressure on the Gaelic Athletic Association to investigate and punish the conduct surrounding the final. Tayforth versus Kyles Athletic, 1982 shinty fixtures

The British Lions' retaliatory code migrated into Scottish shinty folklore after a pair of violent Tayforth–Kyles Athletic encounters in 1982. In the first match, Tayforth priest Eugene O'Sullivan was sent off after punching an opponent and reportedly escaped further punishment only because John-Joe Moran was restrained by teammate Sam 'the Vet' Mansley. The return fixture in Perth was even more combustible: O'Sullivan was subjected to what the account describes as extremely unsavoury treatment, but this time he refused to take the bait. At halftime, Willie Dowds, Moran, and Mansley discussed invoking Willie John McBride's famous policy. When O'Sullivan was struck again in the second half, the '99' call was reportedly shouted. Within seconds, the game dissolved into a mass confrontation on South Inch, with Tayforth players collectively attacking the Kyles side. Remarkably, the incident produced no sending-offs, and Tayforth went on to win 4–1. The episode became a particularly stark example of how the 'one in, all in' idea could transform an individual altercation into a team-wide brawl, while also exposing the limited ability—or willingness—of officials to impose discipline during violent matches in that period.
