Georgia's Vacated Seasons and the Seven-Year NCAA Show-Cause Penalty

University of Georgia basketball program and NCAA / 2000s

The NCAA later confirmed the academic-fraud violations and uncovered an additional problem involving six players who had accumulated more than $1,500 in long-distance telephone charges in December 2001. Although those charges resulted from a hotel error and were never billed to the basketball program, Georgia did not report the issue until an internal investigation in July 2003. In 2004, the NCAA placed the program on four years of probation and ordered Georgia to vacate 11 wins from 2001–02 and every win from 2002–03—30 victories in total. The Bulldogs also lost their share of the 2002 SEC East title and their 2002 NCAA tournament appearance in the official record. Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. The NHL reinstated Bertuzzi for the 2005–06 season, a decision that remained controversial because Moore’s career had ended while Bertuzzi was permitted to return. Moore pursued civil litigation against Bertuzzi, the Canucks organization, Brian Burke, and others, initially seeking millions in damages. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. On March 8, 2022, the Northeast Conference championship game between Bryant and Wagner descended into a chaotic arena fight with an NCAA Tournament bid at stake. The hostility had been building before tipoff: Wagner had moved its pregame practice to Providence College to avoid heckling, while Bryant students reportedly taunted Wagner players as they entered the building. Public-address announcer Jake Zimmer repeatedly asked the home crowd to stop using explicit language, but the warnings were ignored.

Wagner guard Will Martinez attempted to move toward the stands before teammates and arena staff restrained him. Because he left the bench area during the disturbance, Martinez was ejected, although the Wagner administration later stated that no Wagner student had been directly involved in the incident. Play was suspended for more than 30 minutes while both teams went to their locker rooms and officials cleared the Bryant student section, the Wagner fan section, and the Wagner band.
