Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Stephen Kovacs, a celebrated former Columbia saber champion who later coached at Duke, Stevens Institute of Technology, Ridge High School, and his own Kaprica United Fencing Academy, was arrested in New Jersey on October 13, 2021. Bridgewater Township detectives accused him of sexually assaulting two female teenagers whom he had encountered through fencing. According to a police affidavit, one complainant said Kovacs first assaulted her during an overnight fencing competition in Salt Lake City in May 2019, then allegedly picked her up repeatedly in August 2021 and drove her to a Bridgewater parking lot. She also reported that he stayed at her Somerset County home for five nights in September 2021 and assaulted her on several of those nights. A second complainant said Kovacs first assaulted her during an overnight European competition in April 2019 and later assaulted her repeatedly in New Jersey; she also told investigators that he sent her an explicit video in 2020 while viewing her Snapchat account. Kovacs was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. After being released following an October 19 detention hearing, he was rearrested three days later after investigators alleged that he had lied under oath, adding a false-swearing charge. The United States Center for SafeSport, which can permanently bar people from Olympic-sport participation, temporarily suspended him on October 29, 2021. The criminal allegations were never resolved at trial because Kovacs died in custody several months later.
