Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Court filings alleged that Crawford pointed to Moore’s name and number on a dressing-room board, while Crawford and the Canucks denied encouraging the assault. On November 23, 1996, at an Extreme Championship Wrestling house show at Wonderland Greyhound Park in Revere, Massachusetts, 17-year-old Erich Kulas performed under the name Mass Transit after persuading ECW owner and booker Paul Heyman that he was 21 and had been trained by the veteran wrestler Killer Kowalski. Kulas was replacing Axl Rotten in a tag-team match against The Gangstas, New Jack and Mustafa Saed. In reality, Kulas had never received the training he claimed, and Heyman later said he had not known Kulas was a minor. The match was booked as a brutal Gangstas squash, with Kulas being double-teamed and struck with hard-core props including crutches, toasters, and other objects. Before the bout, Kulas asked New Jack to blade him—a planned cut intended to produce theatrical blood—because he had never done it himself. New Jack agreed, but the surgical-scalpel cut went far too deep and severed two arteries in Kulas’s forehead. Kulas screamed and lost consciousness as blood poured from his head, yet the match continued briefly with additional elbow drops and weapon shots. His father, Stephen Kulas, shouted for the bell, yelling that his son was only 17. New Jack then seized the microphone and delivered an inflammatory racial and regional tirade, later explained as an attempt to generate villainous crowd heat, while medics treated the injured wrestler.
