Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. On July 9, 2003, Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Randall Simon became involved in one of baseball’s strangest on-field incidents when Milwaukee’s famous Sausage Race was taking place between innings at Miller Park. As the costumed contestants sprinted past the Pirates’ dugout, Simon leaned over the railing and swung a bat toward the Italian sausage costume worn by college student Mandy Block. The bat struck the padded upper portion of the costume, above Block’s head, but the impact knocked her off balance and sent her into the path of another racer.
