On June 17, 1986, University of Maryland All-American basketball prodigy Len Bias was selected as the #2 overall pick in the NBA Draft by the reigning champion Boston Celtics, hailed as the next transcendent superstar to rival Michael Jordan. Less than 48 hours later, while celebrating with teammates in his campus dormitory, Bias suffered fatal cardiac arrest caused by cocaine-induced intoxication. The tragedy devastated the sports world and directly spurred the United States Congress to pass the landmark Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986.

Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. The NHL reinstated Bertuzzi for the 2005–06 season, a decision that remained controversial because Moore’s career had ended while Bertuzzi was permitted to return. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. The blow knocked Moore unconscious; Bertuzzi’s momentum and body weight drove Moore face-first into the ice, and Vancouver’s Sean Pronger and Colorado’s Andrei Nikolishin became entangled in the pile-on. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Court filings alleged that Crawford pointed to Moore’s name and number on a dressing-room board, while Crawford and the Canucks denied encouraging the assault. Bertuzzi later filed a third-party complaint against Crawford, claiming he had been obliged to follow the coach’s orders; Crawford countered that Bertuzzi had acted in direct disobedience of instructions to leave the ice. After failing to provoke Steve Moore into a fight, Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi followed him from behind, grabbed the back of Moore’s jersey, and punched him on the right side of the head. Reports the following morning described inadequate crowd supervision, dangerous crushing at the Canal End and on Hill 16, and a spectator being stabbed. Supporters also clashed after the final, while buses carrying Galway fans out of Dublin were reportedly pelted with stones. The British Lions' retaliatory code migrated into Scottish shinty folklore after a pair of violent Tayforth–Kyles Athletic encounters in 1982. In the first match, Tayforth priest Eugene O'Sullivan was sent off after punching an opponent and reportedly escaped further punishment only because John-Joe Moran was restrained by teammate Sam 'the Vet' Mansley. The return fixture in Perth was even more combustible: O'Sullivan was subjected to what the account describes as extremely unsavoury treatment, but this time he refused to take the bait. Published on March 23, 2006, Game of Shadows presented one of the most detailed accounts of the BALCO performance-enhancing-drug scandal. San Francisco Chronicle reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams spent two years investigating Victor Conte’s Bay Area nutrition center and Greg Anderson, Barry Bonds’ personal trainer and alleged supplier. Drawing on more than 200 interviews, over 1,000 documents, affidavits, and leaked grand-jury material, they alleged that Bonds began using stanozolol in 1999 and followed increasingly elaborate drug regimens during the period surrounding his historic 73-home-run season in 2001. The book claimed Anderson’s records showed Bonds taking as many as 20 pills a day, learning to inject himself, and using a succession of steroids and growth hormones supplied through the BALCO network. Other prominent athletes named in the investigation included Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, Benito Santiago, Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, and Bill Romanowski. The allegations cast Bonds’ transformation and record-breaking power in a new light, while the Giants were accused of looking the other way because confronting their superstar could have damaged the club and embarrassed the franchise during the opening of its new ballpark. Bonds sued the authors and publisher but dropped the action in June 2006. The BALCO investigation, subsequent prosecutions, and the wider collapse of the era’s credibility made the book a defining document of professional sports’ steroid crisis, even though not every allegation in it was legally established.
