Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. On October 25, 2023, a youth bowling league event at Just-In-Time Recreation in Lewiston, Maine, became the scene of one of the deadliest attacks in U.S. history. At 6:54 p.m., Army Reserve sergeant Robert Card entered the bowling alley carrying a Ruger SFAR semi-automatic rifle chambered in .308 Winchester. His weapon initially jammed after he fired one shot, but two bowlers, Jason Walker and Michael Deslauriers II, charged him in an attempt to disarm him. Card cleared the malfunction, changed magazines, killed both men, and continued firing. The attack lasted roughly 45 seconds; seven people were killed and three others wounded before Card fled, having fired 18 rounds. Plainclothes officers at a nearby shooting range heard the gunfire and arrived within minutes, but the attack was already over.

Shortly afterward, Card drove to Schemengees Bar & Grille, approximately four miles away, where patrons were participating in a cornhole tournament connected to the deaf community. He opened fire as he moved toward the playing area, killing bar manager Joseph Walker when Walker tried to intervene with a butcher knife. Ten people were killed at the restaurant, including four deaf patrons, while ten others were wounded; three additional victims later died at a hospital, bringing the total death toll to 18, with 13 injured. During the shooting, a patron cut the building's power while Card was reloading, an action law enforcement said likely saved additional lives. Card fired at least 54 rounds across both locations before escaping. A 49-hour manhunt followed, involving Maine State Police, the FBI, ATF, dive teams, sonar, and remotely operated underwater vehicles. On October 27, he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a box truck near a recycling center in Lisbon, Maine. Later examination of his brain found severe traumatic brain injury consistent with repeated blast exposure during eight years as a grenade instructor, although no chronic traumatic encephalopathy was identified.
