On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. On 20 May 1993, with Marseille only six days away from the European Cup final against A.C. Milan, Marseille president Bernard Tapie allegedly ordered an operation designed to keep his players fresh rather than risk a demanding league match. Marseille player Jean-Jacques Eydelie acted as intermediary, contacting his former Nantes teammates at Valenciennes: captain Christophe Robert, Jorge Burruchaga, and Jacques Glassmann. Robert and Burruchaga accepted the approach, while Glassmann refused. According to the later testimony, Robert arranged for his wife, Marie-Christine, to collect the money, and he persuaded the Valenciennes team to deliberately lose. At Stade Nungesser, Alen Bokšić scored Marseille’s only goal in the 21st minute; two minutes later Robert left the field with an alleged injury after a seemingly harmless challenge. Referee Jean-Marie Véniel noticed that Burruchaga, normally argumentative, did not protest decisions, while Glassmann appeared to be playing with conspicuous intensity. At halftime Glassmann told coach Boro Primorac about the bribe, and during the second half he alerted Véniel, who recorded the allegation in his report. Police entered Marseille’s dressing room immediately after the match. Marseille was excluded from the following Champions League and other international competitions, later forcibly relegated to Division 2 amid financial turmoil, and eventually spent two seasons outside the top flight. Glassmann, whose refusal exposed the scheme, received the 1995 FIFA Fair Play Award.
