Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. The NHL reinstated Bertuzzi for the 2005–06 season, a decision that remained controversial because Moore’s career had ended while Bertuzzi was permitted to return. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. The blow knocked Moore unconscious; Bertuzzi’s momentum and body weight drove Moore face-first into the ice, and Vancouver’s Sean Pronger and Colorado’s Andrei Nikolishin became entangled in the pile-on. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Court filings alleged that Crawford pointed to Moore’s name and number on a dressing-room board, while Crawford and the Canucks denied encouraging the assault. In the first match, Tayforth priest Eugene O'Sullivan was sent off after punching an opponent and reportedly escaped further punishment only because John-Joe Moran was restrained by teammate Sam 'the Vet' Mansley. On Breeders’ Cup Day at Arlington Park on October 26, 2002, Davis placed a $12 Pick 6 ticket through the relatively lax Catskill Off-Track Betting Corporation, selecting one horse in each of the first four races. After those races were completed, Harn entered Autotote’s system from his office, altered Davis’s ticket to show the actual winners, and then purchased every possible horse combination in the Turf and Classic. The original $1,152 outlay was transformed into nearly $3.1 million: a $2.57 million Pick 6 jackpot plus roughly $498,000 in consolation awards for five of six winners. The plot might have remained less conspicuous had a heavily bet favorite won the Classic, but Volponi—a 43-to-1 outsider—won, leaving Davis as the sole jackpot winner. Investigators immediately noticed that the ticket’s first four selections were identical across the wagers and that the final two races suddenly covered every possible combination, all routed through one small betting operation. The New York State Police, FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and racing authorities froze the payout, while Autotote discovered that Harn had accessed the system despite not being scheduled to work. Harn, Davis, and DaSilva were charged with wire fraud; Harn cooperated and disclosed both the Breeders’ Cup operation and the earlier duplicate-ticket theft, which had cost legitimate winners about $92,500. Harn pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and computer fraud and money laundering, receiving a year and a day in federal prison; Davis received 37 months, and DaSilva two years.
