Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Todd Bozeman’s rise at California was spectacular and sudden. After Lou Campanelli was fired in February 1993, the 29-year-old Bozeman took over as interim coach and immediately became a March Madness sensation, leading Cal past two-time defending national champion Duke and becoming the youngest coach ever to take a team to the Sweet Sixteen. But less than four years later, the promising tenure collapsed. Bozeman admitted that he had paid $30,000 over two years to the parents of prized Golden Bears recruit Jelani Gardner, money supposedly intended to help them drive from their Mendocino home to watch their son play. When Gardner’s playing time later diminished, his parents reported the arrangement to the NCAA, and Gardner eventually transferred to Pepperdine.

The scandal deepened because Bozeman initially lied to California and NCAA investigators about his involvement, only admitting the payments about a week before the NCAA hearing, when it appeared that close associates might otherwise be implicated. The NCAA ruled Gardner ineligible and imposed devastating competitive penalties: California forfeited the entire 1994–95 season, lost all but two games of 1995–96, vacated its 1996 NCAA Tournament appearance, and surrendered four scholarships from 1998 through 2000. Bozeman was forced to resign in August 1996 and received an eight-year NCAA show-cause order, effectively blackballing him from Division I coaching until 2005 unless a school accepted additional sanctions or persuaded the NCAA that he had served his punishment. His situation was compounded by a separate sexual-harassment complaint involving alleged lewd phone calls and threats, although the recruiting violations were the basis of the major NCAA penalties. Bozeman eventually returned to Division I with Morgan State in 2006, becoming the first coach to make that comeback after receiving a show-cause penalty, and later rebuilt Morgan State into a successful mid-major program.
