Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Larry Nassar, a longtime USA Gymnastics national-team physician and Michigan State University doctor, abused more than 265 women and girls under the guise of medical treatment. His victims included Olympic champions and national-team gymnasts such as McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Jamie Dantzscher, Jessica Howard, Morgan White, Maggie Nichols, Kyla Ross, and Madison Kocian. The abuse often occurred during examinations in which Nassar claimed that invasive contact was legitimate therapy. Some victims were minors, and several said the authoritarian, emotionally abusive culture surrounding elite gymnastics made them afraid to challenge a trusted team doctor or report what was happening. USA Gymnastics dismissed Nassar in 2015 after learning of athlete concerns, but he continued working at Michigan State until the university removed him from clinical and teaching duties and fired him in September 2016. The scandal became public after The Indianapolis Star published an investigation in September 2016, prompting hundreds of additional accusations and revealing years of institutional failures. Nassar pleaded guilty to federal child-pornography charges in 2017 and to Michigan sexual-assault charges, ultimately receiving consecutive federal and state prison terms amounting to decades in prison. His January 2018 Michigan sentencing included more than 150 victim-impact statements and a state sentence of 40 to 175 years.
