Less than 48 hours later, while celebrating with teammates in his campus dormitory, Bias suffered fatal cardiac arrest caused by cocaine-induced intoxication. The tragedy devastated the sports world and directly spurred the United States Congress to pass the landmark Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986.

Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. The NHL reinstated Bertuzzi for the 2005–06 season, a decision that remained controversial because Moore’s career had ended while Bertuzzi was permitted to return. Moore pursued civil litigation against Bertuzzi, the Canucks organization, Brian Burke, and others, initially seeking millions in damages. The case generated years of delays, arguments over responsibility, and a separate lawsuit by Bertuzzi against former Vancouver coach Marc Crawford, before Moore’s amended claim was resolved through a confidential out-of-court settlement in August 2014. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. The blow knocked Moore unconscious; Bertuzzi’s momentum and body weight drove Moore face-first into the ice, and Vancouver’s Sean Pronger and Colorado’s Andrei Nikolishin became entangled in the pile-on. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Court filings alleged that Crawford pointed to Moore’s name and number on a dressing-room board, while Crawford and the Canucks denied encouraging the assault. Bertuzzi later filed a third-party complaint against Crawford, claiming he had been obliged to follow the coach’s orders; Crawford countered that Bertuzzi had acted in direct disobedience of instructions to leave the ice. After failing to provoke Steve Moore into a fight, Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi followed him from behind, grabbed the back of Moore’s jersey, and punched him on the right side of the head. Croke Park crowd violence after the 1983 All-Ireland final

The ugliness of Dublin's 1983 victory was not confined to the pitch. Reports the following morning described inadequate crowd supervision, dangerous crushing at the Canal End and on Hill 16, and a spectator being stabbed. Supporters also clashed after the final, while buses carrying Galway fans out of Dublin were reportedly pelted with stones. The British Lions' retaliatory code migrated into Scottish shinty folklore after a pair of violent Tayforth–Kyles Athletic encounters in 1982. In the first match, Tayforth priest Eugene O'Sullivan was sent off after punching an opponent and reportedly escaped further punishment only because John-Joe Moran was restrained by teammate Sam 'the Vet' Mansley. The return fixture in Perth was even more combustible: O'Sullivan was subjected to what the account describes as extremely unsavoury treatment, but this time he refused to take the bait. At halftime, Willie Dowds, Moran, and Mansley discussed invoking Willie John McBride's famous policy. When O'Sullivan was struck again in the second half, the '99' call was reportedly shouted. Capitol Police Officers Turn a Congressional Baseball Field into a Ten-Minute Firefight

The presence of Capitol Police, assigned to protect Steve Scalise because of his leadership position, prevented the baseball practice from becoming an even larger disaster. Officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner immediately engaged Hodgkinson rather than allowing him to fire freely into the unarmed players. Bailey advanced onto the field, while Griner returned fire from near an SUV and simultaneously tried to help the critically wounded Matt Mika. Griner was shot in the ankle but continued assisting Mika after stopping her own gunfire. Alexandria officers Kevin Jobe, Nicole Battaglia, and Alexander Jensen then joined the confrontation. Jensen initially discovered that the safety on his Bushmaster XM-15 rifle was still engaged, but after correcting the error he struck Hodgkinson in the hip; Bailey later hit him in the chest, and Jensen's final shot struck his rear hip. Hodgkinson was handcuffed at approximately 7:15 a.m. and died later that day from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators determined that he had fired 70 rounds—62 from the rifle and eight from a handgun—while four officers fired 42 rounds in return. Scalise and Mika survived after extensive surgery and hospitalization, and the attack was ultimately classified by the FBI as domestic terrorism carried out by a domestic violent extremist with a personalized violent ideology.
