Less than 48 hours later, while celebrating with teammates in his campus dormitory, Bias suffered fatal cardiac arrest caused by cocaine-induced intoxication. Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi received a match penalty and an automatic indefinite suspension, which the NHL extended through the remainder of the 2003–04 season and playoffs. The International Ice Hockey Federation honored the suspension, keeping him out of professional and international hockey during the 2004–05 lockout. Moore spent a year in a neck brace, endured long-term concussion symptoms, and ultimately abandoned his attempted comeback after it became clear he would never be medically cleared to play again. The NHL reinstated Bertuzzi for the 2005–06 season, a decision that remained controversial because Moore’s career had ended while Bertuzzi was permitted to return. Moore pursued civil litigation against Bertuzzi, the Canucks organization, Brian Burke, and others, initially seeking millions in damages. Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore

On March 8, 2004, Vancouver and Colorado met again in a fight-filled game in Vancouver. Moore had already fought Matt Cooke in the first period, and the Avalanche built an 8–2 lead. Shortly before the midpoint of the third period, Todd Bertuzzi entered the ice and attempted to provoke Moore into a fight. When Moore would not engage, Bertuzzi skated behind him, grabbed the back of his jersey, and punched him in the back of the head. Steve Moore pursued a lengthy civil battle against Bertuzzi, the Canucks, team owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and several Vancouver officials and players. A Colorado lawsuit was dismissed in 2005 on jurisdictional grounds, after which Moore filed in Ontario seeking compensation for lost income, medical suffering, and the psychological distress experienced by his parents. The claim expanded over time, reaching CAD$68 million in 2014. The case became especially contentious when Bertuzzi testified that coach Marc Crawford had instructed players at intermission that Moore needed to 'pay the price' for the Näslund hit. Court filings alleged that Crawford pointed to Moore’s name and number on a dressing-room board, while Crawford and the Canucks denied encouraging the assault. Bertuzzi later filed a third-party complaint against Crawford, claiming he had been obliged to follow the coach’s orders; Crawford countered that Bertuzzi had acted in direct disobedience of instructions to leave the ice. The British Lions' retaliatory code migrated into Scottish shinty folklore after a pair of violent Tayforth–Kyles Athletic encounters in 1982. In the first match, Tayforth priest Eugene O'Sullivan was sent off after punching an opponent and reportedly escaped further punishment only because John-Joe Moran was restrained by teammate Sam 'the Vet' Mansley. The return fixture in Perth was even more combustible: O'Sullivan was subjected to what the account describes as extremely unsavoury treatment, but this time he refused to take the bait. On January 4, 1999, WCW presented a seemingly major title match at Atlanta's Georgia Dome: WCW World Heavyweight Champion Kevin Nash, leader of the fan-favorite nWo Wolfpac, was scheduled to defend against Hollywood Hogan, the villainous leader of nWo Hollywood. The match was supposed to build on months of factional conflict, but the entire dramatic premise collapsed almost instantly. After Nash shoved Hogan into a corner, Hogan casually touched Nash's chest with one finger. Nash threw himself backward with an absurdly theatrical oversell, allowing Hogan to pin him and win the championship. Scott Hall, Scott Steiner, Lex Luger, Buff Bagwell, and Miss Elizabeth then helped reveal that the rival nWo factions had reunited. Hogan spray-painted the championship belt with the group's initials, using red paint to symbolize the merger, while the angry crowd threw food and debris into the ring. Goldberg, whose undefeated streak and popularity had made him WCW's central attraction, arrived too late after an intentionally convoluted on-screen arrest angle involving Miss Elizabeth; he was ambushed, handcuffed to the ropes, shocked with a taser, and marked with 'nWo 4 Life.' The arrest was storyline fiction, not a real criminal incident, and the segment was widely mocked because the supposed police station was said to be directly across from the arena.
